The VDI Performance and Storage Problem

Many organizations have deployed Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) or Hosted Virtual Desktops (HVD) with a conventional storage infrastructure only to find that the cost of scaling storage for user desktops is cost-prohibitive and end-users are reluctant to accept the slower desktop experience. The Microsoft Windows family of operating systems were designed to operate with a low latency dedicated local disk for every desktop. However, in a VDI environment, these tasks result in placing a heavy tax on storage as each user, application and desktop compete for limited input/output capacity (measured in input/output per second—IOPS). Without adequate storage IOPS, applications and virtual machines take longer to boot, applications respond sluggishly and leave users frustrated.
